Sport Safeguarding BC (SSBC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elana Liberman as its first Chief Executive Officer.
Elana brings extensive experience in sport leadership, governance, safeguarding, organizational development, and the creation of safe and trustworthy systems. Elana has a background as a competitive freestyle skier. She obtained her Master of Laws from Dalhousie University and has substantial experience as a conciliator, mediator, and educator. Throughout her career, and most recently in Nova Scotia, she has worked across the sport sector to strengthen policies, practices, and cultures that place participant well-being, accountability, and integrity at their core.
As CEO, Elana will lead SSBC through an important period of growth and development as the organization establishes itself as a trusted, independent leader in safeguarding across British Columbia. Her focus will include building strong relationships with participants, sport organizations, government, and community partners, ensuring that SSBC’s systems and processes are accessible, fair, transparent, and centred on the people they are intended to serve.
Elana has long believed that effective safeguarding must extend beyond responding to complaints. It requires creating environments built on trust, so that proactive education and meaningful accountability are embedded throughout sport. As she leads SSBC through this foundational stage, Elana will be guided by the principle that safe, fair, and trustworthy processes are essential to building a strong culture of safe sport in British Columbia.
During this initial period of organizational development, SSBC will focus on establishing the systems, processes, partnerships, and infrastructure required for effective service delivery. While services will not yet be offered, Elana will engage with key partners and stakeholders across the sport sector to help ensure that SSBC’s eventual launch is thoughtful, effective, and responsive to the needs of participants and organizations across British Columbia.
